Long-time avalanche researcher Dr. Bruce Jamieson released a video last week looking at two ways to estimate avalanche size. He toured up to an avalanche deposit in Kananaskis Country to study the aftermath of a rider-triggered avalanche from March 24, 2024. First, he uses a visual method to estimate the size of the avalanche, then he uses a quantitative method. You can watch the video here:
Avalanche size has been a topic of interest for Dr. Jamieson in recent years. At ISSW 2023 in Bend, OR, he co-authored a paper with Tyler Carson, Lisa Larson, and Brendan Martland, that proposed modifications to the avalanche size scale.
